Expedition Expeditions : the kingdom of altitude. Altitude which makes us dream and then, which surprise us. Often it makes us suffer, some even die from it. But to celebrate its magic, one must know how to meet up properly. Step by step. With carefuleness and a good dose of humility.
Expeditions imply important notions such as those related to base camps, altitude camps, portage, hiring and mountaineering skills. Expeditions ask for teamwork, time and energy, a real group effort and a real commitment.
An expedition is different from mountaineering done in the Alps. The adventurous spirit of those travelling to the Himalaya, McKinley or to Patagonia need to deal with more than the technical problems related to the ascent : organization, authorization, team constitution, higher costs, isolation, absence of backup in case of emergency…
That is why some climbers say that an expedition is a little bit of climbing but a lot of footwork buried in a ton of paperwork. For others, it is the ultimate mountaineering experience where sport and adventure coexist.
Mountaineering experience is necessary to go on an expedition. The participants need to be able to move by themselves on mixed land (snow, ice and rock). Particpants also need to be prepared for long periods of isolation, tolerance and autonomy being vital caracteristics for the success of an expedition, both on the mountain and in the group.
Nothing is guaranteed during and expedition, curiosity and an improvisation sense are absolute necessities. Contrary to accompanying clients in theAlps, a guide in an expedition is responsible for the group conduct of the activity and not for individual support. The guide secures the path (fixed ropes, etc.) and advises the group on the best mountain strategy. Participants might be expected to climb to high altitudes without the guide’s presence.
A part dedicated to training and autonomy is always present in expeditions. For safety reasons, but also for more pleasure and success…for everyone. |
