High mountaineering week-end - Ortles
Ortles is the highest summit of South-Tyrol located in the extreme western Alps.
Highlight From the summit, an exceptional sight extends on Silvretta massif, Ötztal Alps valley, Dolomites, Brenta and Presanella and per good weather even until Finsteraarhorn! Just as the view on the road which leads to Stilfser col will remain unforgettable. Crossing by the edge involves us along the Hintergratwild mixed edge.
Saturday: Appointment at 10:45 at Landquart station (a plan with public transport schedules to join the meeting point will be send with your inscription confirmation). Transfer with the mountaineering school bus via Flüela and Ofen cols towards Müstair valley then by Obersten Vinschgau to Sulden, 1844 m (6,050 ft). With ski lifts then on feet, we reach Langenstein and Hintergrathütte hut, 2661 m (8,730 ft). Common diner with a sumptuous sight on Königspitze North-western face. Course presentation.
Gone up duration approx. 1 hour.
Sunday: After breakfast, still in darkness, we join the beginning of Hintergrat, then follow the traced way and we reach Oberen Knott by an easy climbing passage. After a broad firn, we cross under Signalkopf and climb the short crack, which marks the ascent key passage. Then we cross a steep passage, then an exposed passage in rock and a stiff rise on a firn which involves us on the last rocks leading to the top. What a panorama! The descent goes by oberen Ortlerferner then by Lombardi bivouac, a passage ensured by iron chains, a passage on an exposed edge and we reach Payer hut, 3029 m (9,938 ft) for a break. Descent on Sulden by Tabareta hut and return on Landquart.
