Description:
Gspaltenhorn is, for many people, a quite unknown mountain, which hides at the end of Lauterbrunnen valley. Its famous northern face is one of the great classics, so much dreaded on, where alpinism history was written. Gsapltenhorn is registered at the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO world heritage and offers an exceptional sight on splendid Bernese Oberland summits.
Saturday: Appointment at 12:20 at Reichenbach station in Kander valley. Transfer by Griesalp, 1408 m (4,619 ft) then ascent by Steineberg and Gamchi to Gspaltenhorn hut, 2458 m (8,064 ft). Common diner with a spectacular Morgenhorn sight. Course explanation and presentation.
Ascent duration approx. 3 hours.

Sunday: After breakfast, we start still in darkness, the ascent towards Bütlasse, 3020 m (9,908 ft), from where we continue to the famous Leiterngrat edge. By alternating rises and descents of easy climbing passages (according to season, sometimes snow-covered), we join “Bösen Tritt”. The following stiff passages are equipped with fixed ropes which helps rises and descents. At the end of the fixed ropes a last snow and rocks edge enable us to join the Gsaplenthorn summit, 3436 m (11,273 ft). The sight is just incredible: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau parade and behind, sublimes Bietschhorn and Weisshorn pyramidal forms take shape majestically! Descent is done by the same route to the hut then by Griesalp to Reichenbach. Individual return back home.
Ascent duration approx. 4 hours ½, total walking duration approx. 10 hours.
